Shah Rukh Khan had not understood the story of this film the first time Karan Johar had narrated it to him.Karan Johar then went engaged Sameer for the film but ended up using Javed Akhtar's line "Ab To Mera Dil Jaage Na Sota Hai." for the mukhda of the film's title song. In his anger, Akhtar had rattled off a line and rhetorically asked Johar if this was the kind of lyrics he wanted. The lyricist had thought that the film's title was vulgar and refused to work in it. Karan Johar had approached Javed Akhtar to write the lyrics for this film.This was Karan Johar's first film as writer and director.
